Ephesians 3:8 To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ,
One of the genuine marks of a true follower of Jesus Christ is humility. When the Holy Spirit does a mighty work in a sinners heart, and he becomes abundantly aware of his lack of usefulness to the Lord without His help, the pride of self gets stripped away. Paul calls himself the very least of all the saints. He isn’t speaking this as sort of a false humility that we often will show when we achieve something grand and want accolades. Rather, this is the true posture of the greatest evangelist that ever lived. In light of the glory of Christ, one has nothing to boast in except Christ alone.
Paul is preaching the message of salvation to the Gentiles and he uses two words that express the fullness of what he is trying to convey. It is one thing to try to describe a friend or fellow worker to people, it is another thing to try to share God. His ministry was to preach the unsearchable riches of Christ. When I think about these two words I can’t help but think about what must have been going through the mind of Paul. His conversion to Christ was nothing short of miraculous. He was struck from his horse on the road to Damascus and blinded by the Lord. He heard the voice of the Lord come to him and ask him why he was persecuting Him. Paul was led by hand where he would stay for several days until a man came to give him back his sight and explain to him how much he was going to suffer for the sake of Christ. For Paul, the riches of Christ are completely unsearchable. He gave his life to serve Jesus and the riches were far beyond the money, power, prestige, position, and comforts this life has to offer.
When we repent from our sin, give up our lives to Jesus, and follow after Him, we become filled with His riches for eternity. Paul calls us heirs with Christ. In Christ we possess treasure that moth and rust will not destroy and thieves can not break in and steal. Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! Amen
