Daily Bible Verse ~ Isaiah 40:5

Isa 40:5 And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”

The word glory is such a part of our Christian vocabulary. We sing it in our worship songs, say it in our prayers and speak it often in conversations about our walk with the Lord.  As we were eating lunch after church this afternoon, I asked Lori to give me her definition of glory. We discussed words like majesty, honor, and beauty. But when it came to God’s glory, it was the most extreme of these words. The awesome majesty, the most honorable, and the greatest beauty. Even as we discussed glory, these words fell short when it came to how we describe God.

I truly believe that no man can adequately define God’s glory, as it is, none can truly define the fullness of God himself. Our minds are much to finite to completely define that which is infinite. When it comes to defining God’s glory, it’s like trying to define words such as love, or the, or is. Even to define the word glory with the word beauty makes it challenging because beauty is not something easily defined either.

So what is God’s glory? One theologian defines it like this:

“The glory of God is the infinite beauty and greatness of God’s manifold perfections. The infinite beauty—and I am focusing on the manifestation of his character and his worth and his attributes, all of his perfections and greatness are beautiful as they are seen and there are many of them. That is why I use the word manifold. ~ So here it is in another sentence. The glory of God is the infinite beauty and greatness of his manifold perfections.”

As you go throughout your day I encourage you consider God’s glory. What does it mean to bring glory to God in our lives? It’s not that He is lacking any glory and needs it from us, but that we are to reflect it like a mirror to the world by giving him honor and praise… As He shines his glory on us, we reflect it to the world and ultimately back to Him.

Lord, show me your glory today and in so doing may I bring you honor and praise that will encourage others to come to know you and your glory in a deep and personal way.

Isa 6:3 And one called to another and said:
“Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts;
the whole earth is full of his glory!”
