Daily Bible Verse ~ Matt 8:14-15

Matthew 8:14-15 And when Jesus entered Peter’s house, he saw his mother-in-law lying sick with a fever. He touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she rose and began to serve him.

Jesus was performing miracles and healing many people during this time of his ministry. He entered the house of Peter, where he may have been staying at the time, and according to Mark’s Gospel the disciples came to Jesus concerned about Peters mother-in-law as she was sick with fever. By the mere touch from Jesus this women was healed and her response was to immediately rise and serve. She spent no time contemplating whether she was really healed, but rather, trusted in the miraculous healing power of Jesus. We can only speculate as to whether or not the illness caused her to become weak from having been so ill, but we do know that her focus was not on herself after she was healed,  but on serving others.

When I think back on times when Jesus has healed me from sickness, whether it was a physical illness or spiritual weakness, I must confess my first response wasn’t to “rise and serve” my Lord.

In fact, I probably spent some time considering whether or not I was actually healed. I may have even said something like, “I am recovering and we are getting take out and the dishes can wait!” My focus was for sure not on what Jesus had done for me, but on myself. Now that’s a heart posture that is hard to serve from.

Where’s your heart today?  Are you eager to serve others because you recognize the amazing gift you’ve been given in Christ? Or are you like me sometimes, standing around in disbelief and uncertainty wondering if you’re really healed from whatever has been holding you back?

Have a blessed Saturday.
