Psalms 3:1-5 A Psalm of David, when he fled from Absalom his son. O LORD, how many are my foes! Many are rising against me; (2) many are saying of my soul, there is no salvation for him in God. Selah. (3) But you, O LORD, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head. (4) I cried aloud to the LORD, and he answered me from his holy hill. Selah. (5) I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the LORD sustained me.
David starts this Psalm by sharing with the Lord the things that trouble him. Though the cause of his troubles are from the sin that occurred many months before, he is still knowing that God, in his amazing grace, is willing to listen to his heartache and troubles. How many times have we come to a place of trouble and been so overwhelmed by the guilt and shame that came from our sin that we were afraid to come to the Lord in prayer? But God is faithful and just and always willing to comfort his children when they come to him with a broken and contrite heart.
As we come to the Lord the lies of the enemy will fade away like the evening sun. The enemy wants to accuse you of many offenses, even getting you to doubting your own salvation. But we know that we have a High Priest in heaven who is our shield from the fiery darts of the devil. His protection can be trusted at all times and in all circumstances. The protection the Lord provides for his saints is no match to whatever scheme the enemy may bring. He will lift your head high again so you can face the day and find great joy in Him. As we go from the time of sorrow with our head bowed to place of victory, our head as well as our countenance will be lifted high in glory and praise to Him.
Whether we are in our deepest sorrow or our greatest joy, the Lord answers us from on high. He is the rock of our salvation and will never let us down in times of trouble. Just as the stream provides life for the tree planted along its banks, so too does the Lord sustain those who call upon His name. He will never leave or forsake any of His children.
