Psalms 4:1-8 To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments. A Psalm of David. Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have given me relief when I was in distress. Be gracious to me and hear my prayer! (2) O men, how long shall my honor be turned into shame? How long will you love vain words and seek after lies? Selah. (3) But know that the LORD has set apart the godly for himself; the LORD hears when I call to him. (4) Be angry, and do not sin; ponder in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent. Selah. (5) Offer right sacrifices, and put your trust in the LORD. (6) There are many who say, “Who will show us some good? Lift up the light of your face upon us, O LORD!” (7) You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound. (8) In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.
David begins this Psalm with a prayer. He knows that the first place to turn is the Lord during his challenging time. Rather than fretting about his problems and trying to come up with answers all through the night, he cries out to God and finds his rest in Him. David finds comfort and assurance in knowing that the Lord hears his prayer and will put joy into his heart. God gives him peace at the end of a challenging day and he finds great comfort and security leaving the troubles in the hands of the Lord.
As we come against challenges today we have the assurance of knowing that we are not forgotten by the Lord. Though there are difficulties in relationships, health, or even finances, we have a Savior who knows our pain and wants us to come to Him for our rest. How often have you wrestled all night over a situation only to find yourself coming to the new dawn without having a solution? Find your rest in Christ and lay whatever struggle comes your way at his feet. Jesus tells us in Matthew 11 to come to him when we are burdened and weighted down with many challenges. He is gentle and will give rest for our souls. His yoke is easy and his burden is light. When we take on the yoke of Christ we will find rest for our souls and peace when we lie down and sleep. Remember today, you are not alone, you have a God who will comfort you and keep you safe when you seek after His rest and leave the worry and wonder behind.
Prayer
Lord, Help me today to find my rest in you. Give me peace as I walk with you through challenging times and may I show others the power of your amazing grace in my life. Amen
