We sing it in hymns and it is preached in pulpits all over the world, “What a friend we have in Jesus.” And it rings true in every Christian’s life. We do have a friend in Jesus around every obstacle, during every joyous time, and when things get just flat out hard. Jesus is our true friend and will never leave us or forsake us (Heb 13:5-6). But sometimes the road we are going on gets really dark and it is difficult to see our Friend amongst the weeds. That is where an earthly friend can help.
Proverbs 27:17 tells us that iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another. When we are in continuous fellowship with Christian brother’s and sister’s we are sharper and acutely aware of the snares that lie before us. I’m not just talking about watching a football game or going shopping, Prov 27:17 is reminding us that we are to work at sharpening the minds of one another regarding the things of God. Going out with friends and having fun is good, but in order to avoid the snare we must also have friends in our life that help us sharpen our minds so we can ultimately bring glory to God in all that we do.
Having a true Christian friend that you can share your life with is rewarding and strengthening. This world brings us much trouble, it is far better to not go through it alone.
Blessings to you as you seek your true friendship in Jesus.
